A Message from Dr. Sharon Vitella
regarding Harrington's NCLB status

The Thomas E. Harrington Middle School is home to 1,056 students in Grades 7 and 8, and 125 staff members, each school day. The professional staff of our school makes a daily commitment to go beyond minimum expectations while we continue to raise our standards. Harrington students make daily contributions to their school and their community. Our achievements are also a result of the efforts made by area businesses, parental support, advisory groups, local public agencies, and individual community members. Collectively, these resources enhance and enrich the total teaching and learning environment.

Learning through teamwork, the heart of our school’s philosophy, is accomplished by sound organization and programming. As a relatively large middle school, we have organized into smaller learning environments – teams - to create a more personalized environment designed to meet adolescent needs. Our school provides students with many opportunities to develop academic concepts and skills, acquire fundamental knowledge, determine interests and special talents, and experience a sense of belonging.

Our teams are comprised of an interdisciplinary group of teachers working together with one set of students. This design satisfies students’ needs for close relationships with teachers and friends while moving towards greater independence. Teachers have common planning time so they can meet regularly to share program ideas and lessons, plan field trips and discuss individual student progress and needs. Leadership and innovation are encouraged at all levels. Through the use of technology, teacher webpages, voice mail, and e-mail, teachers and parents are encouraged to keep a close partnership.

The challenges and obstacles facing today’s youth are greater than ever. The continued support of our parents and the Mount Laurel community is an essential part of our students’ success. Our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) assists in many ways through volunteer efforts, fund-raising and hard work to supplement our school efforts. Our Spirit Team provides numerous outlets for family fun, and our entire student body and staff take very seriously our commitment to community service to those in need.
